    Looking for a UX Writer?

Just recently, I’ve had the pleasure of working on a wonderful app, that has tested my UX writing skills - specifically microcopy writing skills - to the max.

What could be so difficult about microcopy, I hear you ask? Fewer words surely equals fewer creative and practical decisions surrounding words on the page, does it not? But hang on a moment. All words are not created equal. This is an important point to remember, especially for those who believe in paying Copywriters by the word (don’t get me started!).

Microcopy refers to the short phrases of digital content that shape the user experience. From creative click-thru’s to practical messaging, to teeny packets of content that are small on words but big on meaning. Microcopy guides the user through the buying, learning or engagement experience, streamlining the process, increasing clarity, supporting enjoyment and tone of voice.

In fact, UX writing is basically copywriting with a nod to the reality that so much digital content is now being created that a new category is warranted.

It all comes back to marketing. When old categories (like “Copywriter”) cease to satisfy audience appetite for novelty, the bot-masters at Google decide to roll out market segmentation to the digitally unwashed, by creating new terms like “UX Writer”. When all else fails, segment and then segment the segments, as the saying goes!

If your UX Writer is not an experienced Copywriter, you’re likely going to run into trouble with your brilliantly conceived app. You’ll probably end up writing the UX, Microcopy, Microcontent, Copy, Minicontent, call it what you will, yourself. (Hey, you might even find you’re good at it, so much the better!) But when it doesn’t work out, the end result is,  typically, woefully unprofessional. Neither you, nor your audience, will be able to quite figure out why.

The secret sauce is experience in promotional communication, across a broad range of contexts, markets and media.  Here I am, at your service! If you have an app that needs the specialist UX writing treatment to guide, engage and delight your audience, call or email today.
